Russ Reese (bass/vocals), Kristin Reese (percussion/vocals), Amy Grahek Callanan (fiddle/vocals) and Cassie Burgenbauch (guitar/vocals) are The Bodie 601 band. On their recent release Fortune’s Calling the band plays bluegrass/Americana music.
This an album that displays creative, technically proficient instrumental work and exceptional vocal harmonies. It’s the type of music that I find it hard not to appreciate in some way. On top of that the production is top notch. Overall, there isn’t much to complain about here. One thing to note is that this album has a mix of cover and original compositions.
They open with “Feast Tonight” which is one of the faster, more upbeat songs on the album. The banjo stuck out to me here but the vocal harmonies are simply lovely. It’s a great opener but certainly not the last great song on the album.
Up next is “The Hanging Tree” which is a cover that they absolutely crush. The overlapping vocal melodies are precise and seamless. Don’t miss the majestic sounding lead fiddle solo on “America’s Far Shore” or the serene and calming vocals on “It Can’t Be Far.” They do more than justice to Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” and Led Zeppelin's “Nobody's Fault but Mine.” They close with the fast and fun “The Bodie 601” which I’m sure is what gets an audience moving in a live setting.
The only thing I question on this album is the mixture of cover songs and originals. Sometimes you see a band throw in one cover into an album full of originals or do a whole album worth of covers. The fact that they more or less split it 50/50 was a bit odd and might be confusing to someone who is not familiar with the originals.
Musically, the band is simply fantastic. Rich harmonies and the delivery is just great. This is music your ears crave for.
