The Coffis Brothers & the Mountain Men consists of five fellas from the Santa Cruz Mountains region. Since 2010, they have played around and near the Bay Area. The band members consist of Jamie Coffis (vocals and keyboard), Kellen Coffis (guitar and harmonica), Kyle Poppen (guitar), Mason Hutchinson (bass) and Henry Chadwick (drums). The Coffis Brothers & the Mountain Men’s Wrong Side of the Road, their second full-length album, takes listeners back in time to the past musical dynasties, especially the golden era of rock in the 60’s. It channels some of the greats like The Beatles, Tom Petty and Neil Young.
Wrong Side of the Road blends blues, country, folk and rock to create an album that not only captures important musical eras, but the essence of gratifying music with both knee stomping and clapping jams, and somber songs of personal relevance. “Trouble Town” exemplifies the easy-nature sound of some country style, rock songs. The lyrics and instrumental composition mainly help create this feeling.
“Love of Mine” produces a more acoustic experience by constructing a reflexive story of a person’s journey through life. It relies heavily on calming guitar strokes and simple lyrics. Its beat arrangement, lyrics and meditative atmosphere make it one of Wrong Side of the Road’s most hypnotic singles. “Before and After (Featuring Tammi Brown)” also uses an acoustic style to tell a striking love story with all the pain featured in the vocals, lyrics and band accompaniment.
“Rollin” builds a fast-paced, guitar heavy exciting song, with an ‘I’m not taking your crap anymore’ vibe. It’s one of the Coffis Brothers & the Mountain Men’s most empowering rock songs, with the intense guitar strokes, and clapping inducing and generating feet tapping spasms. “Give it to Me” channels the slickness of the blues with Coffis’ diction and the instrumental arrangement choices. The Coffis Brothers & the Mountain Men’s cool blues sounds continue on songs like “Big Time.”
The Coffis’ Brothers & the Mountain Men carefully created an album both marketable and a love note to all the greats that influenced their music. Wrong Side of the Road crafts sing-along, jump on the furniture style rock tunes, while also making spine chillingly beautiful ballads. This album really showcases the band’s artistry, perspective as musicians and their talent. Bay Area residents surely should catch the group live, because the Wrong Side of the Road creates electricity that will explode in a live arena.
