The task at today is the Mancunian four piece alt-rock outfit The Disappearing: James Farrar on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Antony Horne on lead guitar and vocals, Justin O'Connor on Drums, and bassist Ciaran Laver.
In my humble opinion some of the greatest bands of the last thirty years have hailed from Manchester, among them The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, and Oasis. Manchester is a music city full of working class folks who sometimes also play a bit of music. The four lads in The Disappearing actually met at work and started jamming in the same building.
Their initial release is the four song EP A Message from the Archive. The opening tune “Can You Hear Me” is a slow builder of solid rock that sounds like the old Manchester sound that is guitar driven and takes its time working its way into the listener like the turn of a screw.
Next we get the slow, loud, fast, and quiet “Breaking Through” which reminded me a bit of the 90s emo kings Sunny Day Real Estate in the way it just sticks to the bones like meat. The slow moving “Lay Me Down” gets a little hyped near the end but in the grand scheme doesn’t quite live up to the others. But The Disappearing close out A Message from the Archive strong with nuanced, bluesy rocker “Staying High.”
What I really loved about the The Disappearing is that they have a cohesiveness to their music which I cannot stress enough is critical to a bands success. It means they’re playing together towards something larger than just their sole instruments sounding good on their own.
I know this is a just a four song EP but I think that The Disappearing is on the right track, however I believe a full length will really be able to show whether or not they’ll fade in or fade out.
