The Filthy Politicians

Modern Man
self-released; 2014

3.7 out of 5

By Eva Cantillo

The Filthy Politicians discusses important global issues like domestic violence, consumerism and media deception. Modern Man infuses catchy hooks, transcendent vocals by Drew Wadden and philosophical lyrics to describe the problems with society. “Modern Man” represents the album’s most developed track with its integration of everything from borrowed speeches to the subtle backing of the piano and other instruments. “Concrete” feat. Wadden and Hazel cleverly uses tones, vocals and beats that sound like “Ride Wit Me” by Nelly. By referencing this song, The Filthy Politicians criticizes people who blindly follow artists and lyrics’ commands: they often pick repetitive-catchy lyrics over music with an actual purpose.

“142 Years” uses Wadden’s vocals in a U2’s Bono style to discuss the problems with not cherishing natural resources. “Help You Make a Sound” seems like the most personal track on Modern Man as it deals with domestic abuse. Like with “Concrete,” The Filthy Politicians channels some of Eminem’s most famous tracks glorifying violence and blasts him for being part of a culture that shames victims and praises their victimizers. It also uses found news stories about domestic abuse to help create one of the quieter, but powerful tracks. All of the tracks mentioned – and many others – showcase The Filthy Politicians’ artistic style and unique vision for rap’s present and future.

While listening to The Filthy Politicians’ Modern Man, you’re forced to question your own link to the decline of the modern world. Modern Man haunts you long after the last track, because it doesn’t just impress you with the production of each single but the meanings behind the words. Not only will rap fans enjoy this album, but anyone who likes their music to inform and question the masses will too.
