The Fismits is a band from South Africa that just formed in 2016 and have already released a four-song EP entitled Anywhere. The EP is a DIY lo-fi effort recorded in their home studio. They have a have general rock sound that could bare comparisons to everything from Bruce Springsteen to ’90s alternative acts.
The band opens with “Anywhere” which is the arguable highlight. It has a forward moving momentum and a good energy. That being said better production value could have taken it to a different level. It’s a well written song with tight delivery; however the structure felt so familiar.
Up next us “With Me” which is a straightforward rock song revolving around distorted power chords during the verse. The band's most inspired moments comes a little before the two-minute mark. The chaotic drumming and shimmering guitar sounded great and I was hoping for more out of the box thinking like that. The piano and synths sounded good.
My favorite song was “Satellite.” I just thought the energy worked and overall it was the vocalist’s best performance. The breakdown section after the one-minute mark worked really well and the anthemic chorus was the cherry on top.
The band is off to a solid start with these three songs. It will unequivocally take some time to find a signature sound since they formed so recently and that's the main thing that I think they should focus on at this point.
I’d like to see them dig deeper and figure out how they differentiate themselves a bit more from the crowd. The songs were solid but they weren’t exactly taking any kind of chances or stepping outside of tropes we have heard before.
I’d say this band is definitely one to keep your eye on. There isn't enough material here to get a good feel for the band's abilities but it certainly hints at potential.
