Rafe Kimball (guitar/vocals), Ben Besocke (drums/vocals) and Sam Besocke (bass/lead vocals) are The Fivers. The band is back with their second release entitled In Stock and Out of Style.
The eight songs come in at a crisp twenty-one minutes with not a wasted moment. They hit upon a vibe somewhere between ’70s punk and ’90s indie rock. The third winning factor is the production and recording quality. They sound like an actual band playing in a room. The sound veers towards lo-fi but not lo-fi as in we recorded this with one mic. Lo-fi as in we have enough mics to have overheads for the drum sound.
The eight songs sequentially is where the album really comes together. There are tons of tracks with catchy hooks like “Met Myself,” “Small Time Heroes” and “Figure It Out” but no one song really stuck out as the leader in the pack. This is a good thing in my opinion. I never was a fan of buying a CD when I was in college only to discover I only liked three of the ten tracks.
That being said there are some slightly different flavors like surf rock inspired “Saturday” or the lounge-y “Used To Meet.” The band can rock out as well as you hear on “Break My Mind” that isn’t too far off from the The Pixies. The band embraces isolation and appreciating what you have on “All That I Need” while “In The Dark” is a strong closer with memorable vocal melodies that embraces a minimal approach similar to the band Television.
I have to admit I find myself really appreciating this type of music because I grew up on bands with a similar style. Back in the ’90s you would have found me in high school with a clunky portable CD player rocking out to a band with a very similar style. This should be a nice treat for a lot of fans of indie and punk rock.
