The Icon (guitar/lead vocals), Danger Dan Goodnight (lead guitar), Sir Chas House (bass), Big Hoss (keyboards/vocals) and John “The Hammer” Marnie (drums/vocals) are The Fundamentals. I reviewed their previous album Full Mental Jacket in 2014 and was impressed by the raw, unbridled rock the band brought to the table. They are back with MonuMental:The Best of The Fundamentals.
This is an album that certainly qualifies as a double album. The album contains a whopping sixteen tracks. There is denying this album will take a little bit of time to completely explore. That being said this music is easy to appreciate because its no frill style rock in the essence of AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Motörhead and other like-minded bands.
Their music doesn’t contain many surprises along the way but in certain cases that's fine. Some people like their steak without any unnecessary ingredients like bleu cheese, truffles or whatever else. That's what you get here - music without any unnecessary dressing.
They start off with an upbeat, high energy song entitled “It’s About To Get Loud.” It reminded me of the same kind of vibe as “Rock and Roll All Nite” by Kiss. The music is fun and the chorus is anthemic. Good way to open an album. “Streets Of Times” has a good amount of southern rock in there. I couldn't help but think of Lynyrd Skynyrd and My Morning Jacket.
Suffice it to say if you enjoy the first couple of songs there is no doubt you will enjoy the rest of the songs. There may not be much diversity between the songs and yes there are a bunch of rock tropes but who cares. I still love a blazing lead guitar and a rock band that has some attitude.
Rock was never meant to be pretty and that's why these guys stay true to the spirit.
