Think of alternative indie mixed with pop and serious guitar riffs and that’s what The Giving Moon is blasting through your speakers. The band is a three-man production and has been playing together since 2007. The Wild is the band’s first EP, which may be long overdue because of their recognition as successful musicians and producers.
From the get-go, the opening track on the album titled “Making Chemicals,” gives us a taste of the bands potential for constructing extremely catchy and vibrant melodies. The guitar acts as an anchor to the song and it gives a multi-layered structure for the percussions and the lyrics to flow; “your life makes mine complete, feels right, let me know, if you’ll say, we can meet over and over.” This song somewhat reminds me of a French Kicks or even Modest Mouse song in regards to sound and feel.
The second track titled “Hills” is bit more slowed down and has this tinging guitar chord that sounds like it should be ringing over a calm salty sea surrounded by soft lush hills. The track really brings a colorful and fun vibe that just makes you want to play by the beach or run around with a lover “and we can watch the stars in the sky… we’ll run to hills.” Another track titled after the album, “The Wild” gives me the vibe of an Arcade Fire song. The song is lead by varying and very pleasing vocals and is under-fed by jumpy guitars and running percussions. While listening, you begin to fall into the song not knowing what is overtaking you, the gentle vocals or the gentle metering of the percussion.
The Giving Moon really does have quite a lot to give and just as the moon, all of it is constantly changing phases. Every song on this EP has its own personality and way of penetrating your consciousness and tapping in to the part that likes jamming to music. It seems as though there are more than just three members to this band as the layering and quality of sound is very high within this EP. Overall, The Wild is a great collection of music for anyone who enjoys alternative indie or rock. It is up to par with some of the most popular indie bands currently under the radar.
