Kendall Goddard (vocals), Don Delano (guitar/vocals), Alisha Critchley (violin/vocals), Dave Larocque (bass) and Trevor Ainsworth (drums/percussion) are The KGB. Their self-titled debut The KGB is a warm mix of folk, roots and other like minded genres.
The first thing that stuck out to me was Goddard’s vocals. She has a high pitched voice and I’ll admit it took me a couple of spins for it to sink in. The acoustic instrumentation does fit her vocals quite well. I felt like the warmth of the production was essential to making the songs work so well. The EP starts with “Actually” which was a good choice for an opener that’s single worthy. It’s an upbeat song that gets to a hook in under a minute. She sings, “And you are the one in this moment that I’m thinking of / You get to me / It’s not bad It’s nice actually / Ba Da Da Da Da”. I really appreciated what the bass line was doing during the verse. “Broken Open” goes into a more traditional country and folk type territory. I loved the vocal harmonies that were happening during the chorus and the violin on the verse. ”C'mon Lover” just goes down easy. The whole song is smooth and slick. Melancholy sounds good on Goddard as she displays on “Lonesome Feelin'” while “Pretty Fine” brings the mood way up. “Sweet” is short and sweet. They close with “I Care For You” which closes the EP on an upbeat, optimistic vibe. The EP is a solid first effort. The band isn't pushing any boundaries but will surely attract fans of folk, root music and country at the very least. I thought the songs were well written, the performances were professionally executed and the production was exceptional. The band has the goods and I look forward to their evolution.
