The Losing Team is a three-piece band from a small town in Florida that released an EP entitled The Snailovercello Sessions. The music is loose, not particularly original and sounds like the definition of a garage band. This is the sound of three guys who love music, with consumer recording gear creating songs that tip their hats to their influences.
They start off with a song called “Knockaround.” The verse is pretty much derived completely from Neil Young's “Heart Of Gold.” Everything from the way the drums are played, to the acoustic guitars to the vocals. When the chorus hits they end up putting on distortion on their guitars and banging out a chorus.
“Feeling For Two” is a raw sounding folk song with some decent vocals that are sometimes off key. It is a good track all around. “Ghost Is Worn” is a simple three-chord Ramones type song. It’s fairly catchy if yet another deviation in genre and style. The next track “Blisters” is a stripped down pop revolving around a couple of guitars and vocals while the closer “Amorus You” is the highlight of the EP. It has the best melodies as well as vocal performance.
The Losing Team is a young band. The members are still in college, which gives them plenty of times to grow as musicians. The Snailovercello Sessions isn't particularly inspired but has occasional fleeting moments, which point to better things to come. It sounds like they are having a fun time playing dive bars in Florida but if they hope to get a larger fan base they will have to carve out a sound that feels uniquely their own
