The Motivated Sequence is an indie pop band based in Boston, MA. They are a band that is doing a lot of things right. Their album The Science. The Fiction. was professionally recorded, mixed and mastered. On top of that the cover art is ten thousands times more intriguing than something someone took with their iPhone.
After spending time with the music it felt stuck in limbo between wanting to a straight up commercially viable pop/rock album and something that leaned more towards an indie vibe. The band has been compared to Arcade Fire and Death Cab and Cutie.
I think that's fair but I also think you could throw in a more mainstream band like the Goo Goo Dolls in the mix as well. I don’t mean that in bad way but a song like “Stranger” certainly has some comparable qualities. This dichotomy plays itself out as the album progresses.
The band starts with “Breathe Me Out” which is one of the more commercially viable songs. It’s pretty straightforward with a good hook and overall quite hopeful sounding. One of my personal favorites was “Control” which has a great groove and swooping orchestral strings.
The band had more success with “Interstate.” There are some lush moments which lead to huge crescendos. “Structure” is loose, fun and reminded me of The Decemberists while “Colors & Lines” is a certified single. They close with a subdued song entitled “Card Tricks.”
The Science. The Fiction. was obviously a labor of love. The band really did their homework on how to put together a proper album and it comes through. At ten tracks the album doesn't overstay its welcome and has a very nice flow from beginning to end. The songwriting is consistently solid and I thought there was just enough variety. Two thumbs up.
