Hard Road is the debut solo album from former Electric Rebels frontman and current Sabbra Cadabra lead guitarist Neil Priddey aka The New Journey Project. It really didn’t take me very long to feel like I was back in my childhood with this album. I was still a kid in the ’80s and early ’90s but I still vividly remember a time when most popular rock sounded like this. The first band I really loved was Guns N' Roses and that opened the doors to a lot of metal that was happening in the LA scene. Suffice it to say I think Hard Road will appeal to plenty of people like myself who appreciated this somewhat dangerous form of rock.
Up first is “The Crossroads” which felt like an epic song. You could say arena rock would be a good way to categorize it. This song out of all the songs might sound the most like the album art.
“Woman In Black” has a good amount of attitude and the guitar work shreds. If you happen to like blaring guitar solos the first thirty seconds has got you covered. The song is also quite catchy with an anthemic chorus.
Priddey admitted that “Dead Man's Hand” was an ode to “Motörhead.” This is very obvious for fans of the band. I can also say Priddey pulls it off and sounds great. There are great songs ahead as the album continues with “No One's Coming For Me,” “Save Me From Hell” and the atmospheric “Tear Me Down.”
“Hard Road” might be the most anthemic song out of the batch while “Baptised In The Flames” has a number of soaring guitar solos. “What We're Living For” and the closer “The Demon Hides In Me” also delivered the goods.
Although it’s easier than ever to discover new music on the Internet, the fact is the younger generation may not know this style of rock was extremely popular for a couple of years. Musicians like Priddey keep the flame alive so it can be discovered anew.
