While the four-piece band The Original Soundtrack has adopted the classic band structure of dueling guitarists, bassist, and drummer, their blend of genres ranging from alternative rock to blues, jazz and R&B is far from typical. Refreshing and charismatic, their self-titled EP The Original Soundtrack is a simple, yet telling, testament to the band’s talent and technique.

The first song on the album is an instrumental jam called “Indian Summer” which begins with warm, slow tones from a guitar before swing-tempo percussion and other guitars join in the soundscape to create a swaying, head-bobbing chorus of sound. The song progressively becomes more and more blues-y as the riffs from both guitar and bass become more outspoken and frequent.

“DaNcE” opens by laying down a steady, upbeat groove before a melodic female voice laced with aggressive spunk introduces the first lyrics and a new level of energy into the record. Backup vocals are layered under the lead vocalist, and as a whole, the instruments and voices propel each other to a dynamic volume and vitality before sinking back momentarily into a sweet, soft rhythm before diving once more into the high-energy chorus ending.

The next song, “Jetsons” gradually builds upon a catchy guitar riff in the tune’s intro. A suave, smooth voice leads the sounds with jazzy and R&B-infused style through somewhat repetitive, yet super enjoyable and catchy verses and choruses. A blues electric guitar takes the stage with an epic solo towards the end of the track, bringing the song’s energy to a peak before the end.

The final song on the record “Matchlight Girl” combines the blues, rock and jazz genres present in much of the preceding songs into a type of melting pot song, ending with a legendary drum outro. This is perhaps the most memorable song on the EP due to its quick jaunts into many styles and sounds throughout the five-minute aural journey. The Original Soundtrack, a masterful album that highlights the vast flexibility and cultural adeptness of the promising group, will provide The Original Soundtrack with a solid base of listeners and fans that will undoubtedly grow as the band’s repertoire grows.
