The Rump is a new band from Canada that make music that's fun and unpretentious. After listening to their three-song EP Rump Stuff I was thinking this is the type music you hope to find when you stroll into a bar on a Friday night looking for some fun. It’s music that induces a good time.
The band gets the good times rolling with the funky and fun “Get It.” You could argue that the band has some similarities to Ween or possibly even Phish. It’s jammy. The jammy where a bunch of kids in Grateful Dead t-shirts do a hippie dance.
Do kids do that anymore? I might even join them despite my inability to dance if I heard this song live. The guitars are clean, the bass is phat with a capital P and the drums are slick. Just listen to it already.
Next up is “Troubled Mind.” Some of you out there may have heard of a genre called the blues. Well if you have and liked what you heard I think you’ll want to check out this track. It is quite a jump from the first track but I would also say it’s almost on equal footing with the funk that goes as far as style that you want to hear in a bar.
Interestingly enough the blues and funk comes together on the last track “Janice.” The track is fuzzed up and plays into classic rock n’ roll tropes which in this case I had no problem with. This whole EP is around eleven minutes long. It’s an appetizer. I’m pretty sure the band wanted to put something out there as an introduction and if that's the case I welcome them.
I love sound and good vibes. Hopefully, we get to hear some more of The Rump in the not too distant future.
