It seems like the band The Sharrows is having a good time. They started in the summer of 2012 and already toured coast to coast on four separate self-booked tours and recently released their second EP entitled Days of Yore. Fans of The Grateful Dead and The Band are in for a treat. This EP has a classic ‘60s and ‘70s Americana vibe that comes through not only in the songs but also within the aesthetics of the recording.
The five songs on the EP are warm, inviting and packed with tones that will make you want to break out your vinyls. They start the EP with “Yours and Mine,” which revolves around guitars with the perfect amount of ‘70s crunch, organ, bass and drums.
The vocalist has a voice that is equally as warm and inviting as the music. It’s appealing and attractive but can be dynamic when he displays his range. He has inventive lyrics that are poetic in nature. During the verse he sings, “A line of power sucked me in Curving better around the bend Silver in the roadway that you left behind Saved me from a shock further down the line.” By the end of the song the band lets loose and it almost feels like a jam.
“Slips Away” is a great song that features intricate string work all around. This song has some of its roots in bluegrass and has a traditional type of feeling. I enjoyed the vocal delivery on this one as it fit around the music like a glove.
They close with an eight-plus-minute song entitled “Passionate Man.” This encompasses what the band is all about. Great vocals and melodies that get stuck in your head and a song you can light one up to and enjoy. The guitar solo at the end of the track is extra juicy and sounds great over the organ and piano.
This band is solid all around. Days Of Yore is an EP that is easy to appreciate and I suggest you take a listen.
