I have ambivalent feelings about the band name Silence of the Universe. On one hand the name rolls off the tongue well but on the other hand when I heard that name my expectations were already through the roof. I mean can you really be a run of the mill rock/alternative and get away with that kind of name? No, You should probably be striving for some pretty epic sounds if you’re going to name yourself Silence of the Universe. With my arms crossed I starting listening to their self-titled album Silence of the Universe. After the first song “Apathy Reigns” I felt the band was pretty deserving of the name.
Their sound is reminiscent of a myriad of epic bands including Tool and Pink Floyd. I know those comparisons are contrasting to say the least but it makes sense. The double bass drum, distorted lead guitar and even lead vocals have a tinge of both those bands at different times. The next track “Silence of the Universe” is a testament to the band's talent. There is a unique vocal style and goes into a lot of unexpected places. Early on in the song there is a Pink Floyd style lead that is mellow and chill. A little bit later the band starts to pick up the energy with creative swirling guitars and vocal harmonies. Towards the end the band rocks out hard before going into another mellow, smooth lead guitar part. “Marpessa” is just as dynamic and there are some insane peaks on this song. The guitars that burst from the seams, intense drumming and bass are exceptional “This was Farewell” sounds like Pink Floyd on steroids while “Too Crushed by Drudgery” veers towards straight up metal at times. The drummer really flexes his muscles here with some intense double bass drum action. “Blissful Sorrow” is shorter song that showcases a number of changes that range from math rock to hard rock. The vocals hang low in the mix giving way to the addictive and fun sounding guitar and bass parts. Overall Silence of the Universe delivers the goods and after a couple more spins I would say that they are deserving to keep their name. Cheers.
