The Soft Underground is anything but soft. The band from New York City rocks out on their album Lost In Translation in a ‘90s alternative kind of way that can serve as a sense of nostalgia to anybody who grew up listening to bands like The Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins and even My Bloody Valentine. The group has shared the stage with Stone Temple Pilots, Mark Lanegan Band and Ana Popovic.
The songs on Lost In Translation are straightforward, no frills style rock that don’t indulge in electronic elements or too many experimental sounds. They chose to focus on the songwriting, which is pretty solid all the way through.
The opener “Psychedelic Audio” is one of the harder rock songs on the album that tilts its hat to bands like Filter and The Stone Temple Pilots. I always loved when songs would let the bass line ride while the distortion of the guitar pours all over it like Rage Against The Machine used to pull off.
The vocals soar when he sings, “so long, now I’m gone.” It’s a vitriolic breakup song. The next song “Dreamers” instantly reminded me of The Smashing Pumpkins between the guitar riff and the type of distortion they use while “Rockstars & Razorblades” has a melodic, memorable vocal melody.
On the next track “Why Can’t I Sleep?” in addition to the distorted guitars relies on atmospheric, reverb-laced leads. Some more slight deviations occur as the album progresses but nothing that feels too far out in left field. “To Silhouette” is a mostly instrumental song with some impressive lead guitar while “Right Between Her” is subdued and dynamic.
After taking in Lost In Translation I think the band's biggest strength is that they change it up just enough to keep you interested. Recommended.
