The self-titled debut album The Steady Electric by The Steady Electric is in a word fun. Just look at their first song “Raise’m in the Air,” which is upbeat ska that incorporates classic guitar strumming, horns, bass, drums and a lead singer who is obviously into it. He sings lines like “Gonna have a good time / raise’m in the air.” Suffice it to say that the music is probably best experienced live. The band is fairly new to the scene having formed in the fall of 2013 but these five songs prove that they have been hard at work writing formidable songs that any fan of ska will enjoy. Most ska bands have a lot of members and there is no exception with The Steady Electric. The band is comprised of Mikey Karlin (vocals, guitar), Marcos "Wolf" Huerta (guitar), Junior Dillinger (bass, vocals), Israel Ayala (drums), Ajon "the Linch" (keys, vocals), Dan Loren (flugelhorn), Dana Hench (trombone) and Tim Thomas (saxophone). As the album progresses past the first song you realize that band likes to incorporate different genres into their music other than ska, none of which are too far removed. ”Rebel / Soldier (Lay Down Your Gun)” is a nice, smooth mixture of reggae and ska. It’s a great song to hear at a luau or summer barbeque. “Fight When You Know It's Right” has a bit more “oomph” to it. The song is dang catchy upon its first spin and was a personal favorite. Karlin deliver his most memorable vocal melodies and you will probably be singing along next to him in no time. They close with “Stop. Think!” I usually don’t use the word “adorable” to describe music but this song kind of deserves it. This EP isn’t reinventing the wheel and isn’t exactly life changing but you sure as heck can dance to it. That’s good enough for me. Become A Fan
