Hold up. The album I Want My Rock Stars Dead by The Voms was recorded in Australia, mixed in Indiana and then mastered in Chicago and the band is from New York. This album has been to more places than I have over the last year.

The Voms are on to something with their music. They have an original, unique sound that meshes rock and some punk with a bit of L.A. noir. The band takes chances and almost every time they pull it off.

They open with “Left Right” which contains a driving beat, distorted bass and dynamic vocals. I was reminded of Liars in some ways. The lyrics are original. I had no idea what they were about but I liked them. He sings “A is to b is to c is to a is to d is to b is to c is to a is to e A is to b is to c is to a is to 3 with 2 with 1 with you and me.”

“Black Knuckle” sounds like late ‘60s punk that isn’t afraid to experiment. The next track “Mayans” sounds like A Rage Against The Machine song at times but the energy has been completely deflated and replaced with dark L.A. noir vibe. Kick ass. I say it with love that “Let’s Go” gave me anxiety as if time was running out. Kind of like a time bomb was ticking. “Imaginary Friend” and “Stars” are fleshed out songs with a number of catchy hooks while “The Start” contains a number of twisted, cathartic breakdowns. They close with “Time Is A Trick” which is the longest song on the album and arguably the most poppy and single worthy.

I love what this band brings to the table. Their music is fun and unpretentious in a Ramones type of way yet it can feel prolific. Their songs could have come off as novelty but they manage to find a balance in there that keeps them from sounding like a gimmick. The album is an excellent start for the band. I’m really interested to see where they take their music in the future.
