4.0 out of 5 - TOP ALBUM

Forming in 2011 The West is a band that makes you want to dance. On their recent ten-song album titled Never The Place they create songs that fans of bands like Cut Copy, LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture as well as New Order will want in their playlist. This is music that contains infectious melodies, beats anyone can dance to and is accessible in a way that only the most cynical of personalities won't enjoy. It’s obvious after spinning this album that the band took their time crafting songs and didn't simply make beats you could shake your hips to. Beyond the beats the songs are there and stay with you, which is what will separate The West from a lot of other bands barking up the same tree.

The band starts off with the killer track entitled “Ready For More.” They layer a steady, deep 4/4 beat on top of funky bassline and synths sounds that come straight from the ‘80s. Anthony Darnell provides the lead vocals. Darnell has a great voice - period - but with this music it’s just about perfect. His excitement is contagious. Great opener and great way to get the party started.

“Never The Place” revolves around an almost tribal sounding beat and the overall feel is very anchored in ‘80s new wave. Darnell delivers another solid vocal performance, which continues throughout the duration on the album.

The first slight deviation is “Step Back In Line.” While still having elements of dance it also had some punk rock tendencies. As the album progresses the band continues to produce really well done songs. The highlight arguably is “Fashion,” which felt immediately accessible and was in my opinion single worthy.

A couple of years back I saw The Rapture and I have to say it was in my top five shows. Now even though I haven't seen The West live I can imagine you will be dancing your ass off if you catch them in concert. Do yourself a favor and check out their shows on their website and see if you can catch one. In the meantime turn this album up loud and let the good times roll.
