These Young Fools are a band from Seattle comprised of Ethan Risvik (vocals/guitar/piano), Michael Geissler (guitar/vocals), Armando Rico (bass) and Evan Bauer (drums) and they recently released their debut four-song EP entitled Brittle Bones. The band plays rock/pop punk that can bear comparisons to bands like Jimmy Eat World and Taking Back Sunday.
I normally don’t have a lot of patience for these type of bands because they all sound like carbon copies of each other and while These Young Fools at this point may not have too many original aspects to their music there are a number of enjoyable elements.
Risvik has a nasally tween type delivery but he also has some range to his voice. His voice grew on me as I listened to the EP and it works quite well within the music. The music itself is well structured and well thought out. They are tight, play in the pocket and change things up quite often.
The EP starts with “Life In Pixels,” which a catchy tune that showcases the band's capabilities. The basic structure of the song is a number of build-ups that lead to a powerful chorus. They implement little things like strategically placed synth lines and guitar fills that add up. It’s nice to see the band is paying attention to the details.
“Followe the Leader” is another success. They has some inventive guitar parts that help carry the song. Take for instance the clean picked guitar that gets layered with a fuzzy lead and eventually leads to an explosive chorus. The title track and “Something Soft” also hold their own. I thought the synths parts on “Something Soft” were a nice touch and coalesced with the vocals in a nice way.
Even though this genre of music may be wearing thin in an oversaturated market These Young Fools are one of the bands at the top of the heap. Certainly a valiant first effort.
