I can’t say I know much about TOTAL WAVE. They are a Brooklyn band that are relatively new to the scene and they released a three-song EP entitled Pink Baby. Lacking little knowledge didn’t deter me from enjoying the songs on Pink Baby.
For starters the three songs sound somewhere between LCD soundsystem and War on Drugs. There are other comparisons but those were the ones that stuck out with War On Drugs feeling the most obvious. Up first is “In Love & In Pain” which is a song that builds on different types of energy. The first forty-five seconds are built around feedback and white noise as the vocalist starts to sing. I liked his inflection right away. Other elements start to come in and before you know it the drums enter the mix and the song really starts to swing. I thought that the song was catchy the first time I heard it but the second time I was addicted. “The Cost Goes Up” is where LCD soundsystem came to mind. That drum and bass combo was what did it. That being said the guitars are jangly and give the song its own vibe. The song is certifiably danceable and I found myself bobbing my head while typing. The third song “Never Let Go” is apparently a demo but it sounded great to my ears. It has distinctly different energy than the aforementioned songs. The song moves at a slower pace through atmospheric guitars. I kept on picturing being lost in the desert in some sort of hazy dream. The production on the EP is good all the way through. The levels were balanced and the aesthetic of each song was cohesive with the other. This EP went by in a flash. The band has a lot of potential and I am interested to see where they go from here. Until then I suggest you check it out
