Trident Depp is a band that was formed by Daniel Baker back in 2013. Trident Deep had other members but from the information I have it seems to be a solo effort at this point. Baker recorded his three-song EP Cave Paintings in different parts.
Apparently, Baker decided to give his music an entire genre called “melting rock” which is pretty straightforward rock and folk. The EP starts with the title track and begins with clean guitar, vocals and very light percussion. I thought the song had a fairly familiar intimate singer/songwriter vibe. The percussion was subtle and effective but I thought the vocals could have been stronger. I couldn't make out a lot of the lyrics and Baker has trouble hitting notes at a higher octave. Up next is a bluesy/rock song entitled “Rustle Road” which implements the classic “Stairway to Heaven” chord progression. The song has a lot more momentum and I felt like it was the centerpiece. Overall, a well written song which veered towards classic rock. He closes with “Ghost Train” which is dynamic. The song is arguably the highlight of the batch. I thought the song was the most original and unique sounding. Baker shows off his guitar skills which are quite good. Overall, a pretty solid closer. Baker is a young guy who shows some potential on this EP. My advice would be to either stay in a comfortable vocal range or continue to try and improve as a singer. He has a hard time arriving at the note when he has to strain his voice. I’d also advise him to let other people label his music. People are going to have their arms crossed ready to be blown away if you say you are playing a new genre. The songs are well crafted while familiar sounding. Overall, Cave Paintings is a pleasant experience.
