Six years ago Tyler Edwards was in a band called I Anthem. The band released two EP’s and an LP and had some successes with those releases. It isn’t too uncommon for songwriters to write material they aren’t sure would work would fit with the band and that's what happened with Edwards.
His acoustic based material, which put his vocals and guitar at the forefront, is on his solo release entitled Too Young for Love. The songs are easy to enjoy because of the palatable melodies and vocal delivery. I felt like the songs were mostly upbeat and hopeful while even the melancholy songs seemed to shimmer with a sense of perseverance. He begins with “Headed For The Coast” which is arguably the highlight on the EP. It opens with warm acoustic guitar and fiddle. Edwards sings about leaving the coast but also seems to be metaphor for new beginnings and starting over. “Calling Me” has a similar feel to the first song is some ways but is more festive and introduces handclaps and some percussion which give it a bluegrass hoedown type feel. Edwards’ voice soars and is quite dynamic. Edwards introduces some melancholy into the mix with “Down” which sounds just as good on him. The fiddle plays an important role as it accentuates some of the emotions that Edwards is singing about. “Common Ground” was my personal favorite song on the EP. Between the vocal harmonies and guitar picking, I was reminded of Bon Iver. “Sail Along” is a commercially viable song that weaves together a myriad of emotions while the closer “Too Young for Love” solidifies a very well balanced album. Too Young for Love is a solid release for Edwards not only because the songwriting is top notch because it is the flow from beginning to end. Recommended.
