Fortune Teller
self-released; 2019

4.0 out of 5

By My Nguyen

Formed in 2018 by Western North Carolina songwriters Mitch Stewart and Paula Woods, Vagabond Crowe has since become a staple within the alternative/folk scene. The band is later joined by drummer Brent Fleury and Joel Carson on lead guitar, harmonica and fiddle to help embrace a fuller band style.

Vagabond Crowe is releasing their latest, an eight-track EP entitled Fortune Teller. With strong attention to detail, these songs capture the personal and heartfelt, inspired by true events. These songs were written over the course of five years. Lyrics and vocal driven, these emotionally powerful set of songs grasps the fundamental themes of the heart and relinquishes it with warm instrumentals and rich vocals to create a soundtrack that will resonate with listeners long after the record has stopped spinning.

Fortune Teller
opens with “Magic!” that right from the get-go launches with a country-bent, rich Americana vibe. The track really digs into a folk cadence. The sound is energized and filled with panache. The vocals are sung with gusto and flair. The strings underline the gamut of this song. The beat races on. Catchy and melodic riffs add to the contagious cadence.

Dynamic strumming on the acoustic guitar jumpstarts the track “Ghost Of You.” The sounds of the fiddle add an extra backing to the music. The vocals resonate with a soulful flair. About missing someone who is no longer around, this song is a definite highlight, simmering with a dynamic, soulful appeal.

On “Off In Space,” sounds of pitter patter of rain accompany the music to this track. The cadences of strings add in a lush element to the song. Noodling on the acoustic guitar also sidles in. The vocals come in with emotion and range. The track is stripped-down mainly consisting of the acoustic guitar, strings and vocals. A great folky sound pervades.

The closer “You’re A Spirit” features dynamic strumming on the acoustic guitar that casts a dramatic light on this song. This is an upbeat and catchy track with melodic undertones. An energized backbeat saunters in from the drums. The vocals are bold and dynamic. The album closes with a bang with this amped song.

With soaring soundscapes in the folk, country and Americana vein these magical set of songs will startle listeners. Listen on unencumbered by expectations. These are arresting songs that will take you away from your everyday existence. The album will transport you from out of this world.
