Who doesn’t like a good dance song? Dance music has been veering more and more towards EDM, which is why Verskotzi is such a breath of fresh air in 2015. Verskotzi’s sound combines synths with clean, funky guitars on Waving and has more in common with Jamie Lidell, Justin Timberlake and The Jackson 5. Simply put the three songs on Waving are smooth, clean jams that boost your serotonin levels and will make you want to move.
The first song “Day Smoker” starts with a funky guitar riff and atmospheric pads that quickly gets layered with drums and bass. As good as the music is the vocals are really the foundation of the music. Verskotzi sounds loose and when he sings “Dance with me” you really want to. What's better than a dance with a bumping beat - one with infectious vocals and that’s what you have here. “Mayday” is of the same caliber as the first song. I especially enjoyed the layered vocals during the chorus and the synth bass that sounds like it could have come from a St. Vincent album. He sings, “a little too high, a little too low” as the music builds with intensity making way for a memorable chorus. The last track “Sleepless One” is a bit more downbeat and has more of an electronic feel. Multiple synths combine with his reverb laced vocals during the verse, which create a warm atmospheric feel. Once the chorus hits it does so with exuberance. I had a chance to listen to his first full-length Lemon Heart, which contains more guitars and is more or less a rock/pop album. Waving is a departure from that sound and to be blunt his new dance-based songs sound more natural and seem to be the right direction for Verskotzi. The three songs on Waving are a precursor to his next album and if that’s the case - I can’t wait.
