By Jamie Robash

I have always been and likely always will be an excellent liar. It’s in the voice, in the details of the story that I somehow am able to make up on cue. Diarrhea of the mouth one of my high school friends once called it. Straight up lied my way through all kinds of shit throughout my entire life so far. Generally got away with it. My old man’s the same way. Two peas in a pod. The apple by the tree sort of thing.

Confessional moments aside I cannot tell a lie when it comes to business.  And the business at hand is VVOES (pronounced Woes, the double V , a four piece shoegazey dream pop band from Fort Worth, Texas. My nose ain’t growing when I say that I was already on board with these when I saw the cover of their debut EP. It has one of those hazy Instagram filters and it’s a pic of some roses growing on a bush. I dunno I fucking loved it. It just screamed cool at me. I love that kinda shit. Oh and I should probably mention the album’s title:
Get Your Life.

So let’s dive in shall we? Get Your Life opens with the lackadaisical “I'll Never Be Good,” a wonderfully bright tornado of jangly pop that so coated in reverb it would take a grave digger a whole good days work with a shovel to get to its chewy center.

Next up comes the whirlwind of feedback goodness that is “Arsonist of Hearts” on which singer-guitarist  Elijah Wichryk coats his lyrical fears dealings with the opposite sex in handsome amounts of reverb, which continues onto the jagged rock of the equally gauzy “Days Are Numbered” and the beautifully solemn dreamscape of “Who Do You Know.” Wichryk’s bandmates Ricky Williford (Drums), Tyler Moore (Bass), and Rene Floyd (Lead Guitar) all help the hazy show to go on so to speak.

To be blunt VVOES are in no way reinventing a wheel with Get Your Life. But no one asked them do so in my knowledge. But to quote the great Frank Costanza in his airing of grievances: “I got a lotta problems with you people and now you’re gonna hear about it.”  I got no problems with VVOES. In fact if one must have woes it should be VVOES. They are a talent to watch.
