Jesse Fittipaldi (synth/keys), Kendall Fox (drums), Jared Hill (bass) and Nick Phillips (guitar) are We Are Kemosabe. The band recently released a self-titled six-song album We Are Kemosabe. They explain that the songs are in a similar vein to This Will Destroy You, The Melvins, Big Business, and Mogwai. I would agree with that statement and actually would add Explosions in the Sky to the equation as well.
The band gets going with the darker tinged “Disrupt” which actually was similar to a popular ’90s band called Massive Attack. I loved the intro and how the song was unfolding with this tension before exploding. I thought it was a great opener.
Up next is “Birthday 2” which is killer. The image I was getting was of being stranded in the desert. It felt like a slow burn where reverb washes over you that is accompanied by some despair and even some hope.
“3” is almost march-like in its approach. There is again a sense of tension on this song as if air bombers are overhead. It feels vast and this sense of distance is pretty incredible at times. The Mogwai vibes are probably most apparent on “Yes Hard Feelings” and in particular something about the bass reminded me of them. “D” is another impressive track. This song felt a little more drone metal in the spirit of Sunn O))).
“With” is under three minutes and closer but also almost a shift in tone. There are some brighter tones and colors. It also had more of a straight alternative flavor at times and brought me to the ’90s.
This is a great release. The band obviously is experienced and accomplished musicians and fans of some of the aforementioned artists should appreciate these songs. Recommended.
