Wesley Attew is a true bohemian folk artist. He spent the past few years on the road honing his craft and I don’t mean around a small city. While traveling in Asia and Australia he started playing guitar. He recently relocated in a big move from Dubai to Toronto. He found some time along the way to release an EP entitled The Other Side. After spending some time with the EP it’s obvious he learned a lot in his travels and he has some innate talent.
The album starts with “The Kingdom which is an extremely catchy folk song. I heard shades of a band like Neutral Milk Hotel with more folk influence. The production is top notch and I thought the delivery was exceptional. Lyrically he talks about equality. He sings, “Everybody's just the same as me and you / but it’s all been twisted by society's rules / we run around trying to work our way / I hope that we meet at The Kingdom someday.” The song has an ample amount of energy and worked really well as the opener. Next up is "Divides" which is a beautiful song not only in the instrumentation that contains orchestral strings but in the lyrics as well. After that is the slightly controversial "Jesus was a Punk.” It wasn't my favorite track. The song felt a tad more predictable than the previous two songs. "Anyway" is a solid folk song that doesn't need a whole lot of explanation while the closer "War & Peace" may be the most emotionally resonant song on the EP. Attew is not bringing anything new to the table but he got a couple of things going for him - primarily good songwriting chops and solid delivery. The Other Side is a good EP from beginning to end and builds a solid foundation for Attew.
