The story behind an album could change the way you interpret it or at least approach it. The hip-hop artist WI-FI’s recent release Legend of the Soul Gems is his most spiritual minded project to date. On his Bandcamp page he explains his journey and where the songs came from. In this case the songs came from a time when he was in a darker place and questioning the world around him. If you were you I would read the entire details on his Bandcamp page.
Legend of the Soul Gems contains top-notch production. I thought the beats were often original sounding and quiet varied. You also hear the lyrics quite clearly in the mix. Of the fifteen tracks I thought there were some highlights that stuck out to me. The album starts off strong with “Willful Ignorance” which has a solid hook, thought-provoking lyrics and a strong beat. His lyrics are often hopeful and insightful, rapping about a range of things like taking care of kids to health care but that's really just the tip of the spear.
One of my favorite tracks was “Erace War.” I absolutely loved the energy on this track. It felt like music that makes you persevere in times of turmoil. His words are again insightful like on the first track as he seems to be questioning his own inner demons on this track. That being said his lyrics cover so much terrain I would have to write a twenty-page paper just to get past this song.
“The Get Down” was another track that peaked my interest. I was initially attracted to the beat which reminded me of old school Wu-Tang beats. Relatively simple but sounding large with deep bass.
“Waterloo” and “Divine Intervention” were also standout tracks. He treats the tracks with a hallmark flow that by that point in the album you will come to know and love. “Black Dot” is another track you will not want to miss but perhaps he saved the best for last with “Soul Gems.” The song contains lush orchestral strings that sound great against his words. It also is the most cosmic minded, deeply playing into the themes he talks about on his Bandcamp page.
Legend of the Soul Gems has a number of great tracks and also ties in themes and concepts with articulate wordplay that often make you think “what did he just say.” Overall, this is an easy one to give two thumbs up to. Recommended.
