Widening Eye is a two-piece band based in Hagerstown, MD composed of Zach Mongan (bass) and Patrick Demosky (drums). They recently released a five-song EP entitled Eaten by the World.
The songs are dark and instrumental. I found this an EP that really benefits from listening to it from beginning to end. They start off with a slow burn entitled “Heaven Sent” which is very atmospheric and revolves around slow moving soundscapes. The drums were well done here giving some movement to the sprawl of ominous sounds.
They start to pick things up with “Abendroth” which again has some great drum work that drives the momentum of the song when not much else does in the beginning. The song unfolds across its almost ten minute length. There are guitars which build and create a sense of tension and apprehension. I was also really loving the bass parts. The song eclipses and mutates into very dark and ambient territory sort of like something you might hear in a horror movie. It gets experimental before going into post-rock territory not too far from Deafheaven.
The kinetic energy is amped up considerably on “Eschatonic.” This has some prog rock tendencies and they add to their arsenal. They continue to mix all types of sub-genres of rock into “Eaten by the World.” Last up is “Hell Bent” and it is the arguable highlight. It’s a pretty epic tune with monolithic qualities but they also go in many directions and end with more of a fade into what sounds like conversation into what sounds like a crowded area of people conversing.
I thought the songs were great individually but man this an EP that feels more like a journey into the abyss. The band sounds great in general and Demosky is an exceptional drummer. Recommended.
