Will Wiso is an artist from San Diego, CA who recently released his debut self-titled five-song album Will Wiso. Wiso executes his songs with nothing else than a guitar and vocals. Although Wiso’s songs are something a novice could play on guitar and he is far from the best lyricist, he is off to a decent start with some of his songs. At his best he sounds like Dan Bejar from Destroyer when he sings.
The first song entitled "Wherewithal To Stay" revolves around basic chords. Wiso sings, "I want to show you what is right. But you only see your point of view. He mostly strums his guitar but occasionally picks which helps out with the dyanmics "On "Someone Else" Wiso sings about a squeamish, apathetic, lustful relationship where he repeats the same lyrics a number of times. "You Don't" contains some cringe-worthy lyrics such as, "without you I could die, I really hope you feel the same cause if you don't that's pretty lame.” It feels like he strings lyrics together that just because they rhyme. The remaining two songs "Your Fall" and "Faultlines" are similar to what came before. There isn't a whole lot to say about the songs since there isn't that much happening within the songs. The production is decent on the EP but proper use of compression and reverb would have benefited the songs. For instance the his vocals especially during the beginning of his sentences are almost startling. Wiso is a young artist who luckily has time on his side. If Wiso hopes to be competitive with today's best artists he has some work ahead. I would encourage him to attempt advanced guitar technique and work on his vocal delivery. Hopefully, in ten years, he can view this EP as his humble beginnings.
