The composition that is Words are Meaningless is quite self-explanatory and ironic at the same time. Sie Messenger is the artist behind the music and has derived impactful emotions and sentiments throughout his new EP Inanimate without the usage of words. Messenger (notice the irony in his own name) admits that trying to achieve such results was difficult and took much trial and error. Yet it seems like the experimenting paid off because even though the sounds from the album are a bit far-fetched and still very experimental, they are melodic and soothing to the ear and seduces the mind to explore new places and emotions.
The songs that make up Inanimate can be described as new-age industrial with a classical edge. Some of the tones in the music are reminiscent of beats from classic trip-hop bands like Massive Attack and Portishead. A song on the album that we can refer to as pi because it is actually labeled “3.14159265,” has a deep calling bass accentuated by a somewhat creeping soft melody that wraps the song into a twisting ethereal transmission of thoughts.
The goal behind Inanimate is to describe the dilemma in our current world of technology; the pure lack of words in our everyday communications. Messenger is eager to answer or at least present the question; what makes us human? The song “Mechanical Mind” makes the listener feel as though one is trapped in a robot mind that ticks away rhythmically to each passing second, with a somber tune to highlight the reality of one’s inanimate state.
Overall, the EP is a collection of sounds that is a go-to for anyone looking for peaceful contemplation as the tempos and effects in Inanimate may actually induce a relaxed and introspective state. It is also music that may help set the scene for doing art or even studying. The music is well produced and much thought has been put into the composition, yet it is not your everyday music and requires the right mind-set in order to dive in and listen.
