Wubblechap is a band from South Korea that has been around in some formation since 2013. The band has played all over South Korea and recently released a self-titled nine-song album Wubblechap. They describe themselves on their Bandcamp page as “If David Bowie got drunk on Jello Biafra.” To break that down a little further I would say the vocals certainly contain a similar Bowie inflection while the music veers towards three chord punk aesthetic.
The album opens with “Daffodil” which like the other songs revolve arounds guitar, drum, vocals and bass. “Daffodil” more so then a lot of other songs sounds like Bowie. This is certified late ’70s Bowie in the Low vein. It also happens to be one of the catchiest songs in the batch. On the very next song “Kiss 4 Nothing” you can hear more of a punk sensibility. The song revolves around distorted power chords, an aggressive rhythm section and a good amount of energy. “Space Between Us” feels like a playful optimistic breakup song because of the melody. He sings, “The space between us burns me up - just like a comet in the sky / The space between us brings me down / And I just keep on spinning around - around around around.” The next song that stuck out to me was “The Kindred Spirit.” It’s a catchy one which brings the distortion down a notch letting the vocals breathe a bit more. I thought the female vocals worked well on this song. As the album progresses we are presented with songs that come from the same pedigree. He closes with a six-minute song entitled “By Any Other Name” which features some rare piano. Overall, this album isn’t breaking any barriers but it a fun, well-written, no frills album that contains some notable hooks. Recommended.
