You Feel Like Memories

Just Before The Sunset
self-released; 2014

3.8 out of 5

By Matt Jensen

You Feel Like Memories is a project that apparently  formed in June 2014 by Matteo Guarnello and Lorenzo Pompili. The fact that they already released a very respectable often downright impressive  EP entitled Just Before The Sunset that is grounded in post-rock has caught my attention. It’s pretty incredible they were able to put out such a  realized EP but perhaps not all that surprising when you look at their history. The fact is that the duo has been playing together and writing demos for years.

Just Before The Sunset contains a lot of the fundamental aspects of what you might expect from a post-rock but is already carving out a unique sound. I would say there are a surplus of post-rock bands who make grandiose often austere music that could be considered pretension if not done right. That isn’t something I’m hearing here. The music sometimes does sound grand but at the same time somehow feels light, optimistic and even cathartic. It’s empowering rather than nostalgic and points towards possibilities and wonder.

Take for instance the third track “XVI” which initially sounds more like a riff you would hear from a band like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah rather than Godspeed! You Black Emperor. As the song progresses it starts to get more intense but at a little after the two minute there is a breakdown where they implements an onslaught of percussion. I wasn't expecting the such on original implementation of dynamics..

“LXV” is another highlight which revolves around backward sounding guitar sounds, and soaring reverb laced guitars which create an engaging dichotomy of sounds. This song does strive for epic heights that it does occasionally reach. The second half is not too be missed.

This EP has some flaws but for the most part has songs that were thoroughly enjoyable that fans of the genre will thoroughly appreciate. I'm looking forward to seeing where this project goes.
